കേന്ദ്ര സമുദ്രമത്സ്യ ഗവേഷണ സ്ഥാപനത്തിന്റെ (സിഎംഎഫ്ആർഐ) മേൽനോട്ടത്തിൽ കുടുംബശ്രീ യൂണിറ്റുകൾ മൂത്തകുന്നത്തും ചേറ്റുവയിലും നടത്തിയ കല്ലുമ്മക്കായ കൃഷി വിളവെടുത്തു. മൂത്തകുന്നം കായലിൽ നിന്ന് ഒന്നര ടണ്ണും, ചേറ്റുവയിൽ നിന്ന് 350 കിലോ കല്ലുമ്മക്കായയുമാണ് വിളവെടുത്തത്. കഴിഞ്ഞ ഡിസംബറിലാണ് കൃഷി ആരംഭിച്ചത്.

Women farmers reap bumper harvest of green mussels
Women farmers in Moothakunnam and Chettuva have had a bumper harvest of green mussels under the guidance of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI). Kudumbashree units reaped a total yield of 1.5 tonnes of mussels from Moothakunnam and 350 kg from Chettuva. They started farming in December last year in mussel farms (racks) made of bamboo poles.

After the harvest, the produce underwent depuration. In the depuration process also developed by the CMFRI, contaminants from gills and guts of mussels are removed using purified seawater.
Depurated mussel meat from the farms is available for sale at the CMFRI. It can be bought from the Agriculture Technology Information Centre (ATIC) counter from 10 am to 4 pm on all working days till the stock lasts (price: Rs 200 for a 250 gm packet)
