യൂക്കാലിപ്റ്റസ് -മികച്ച ഔഷധ മരം

ഉഷ്ണമേഖല - മിതോഷ്ണമേഖല പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ വളരുന്ന ഔഷധമരമാണ് യൂക്കാലിപ്റ്റസ്. ആസ്‌ട്രേലിയ ഉറവിടമായ യൂക്കാലിപ്റ്റസ് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് കാലം മുതലെ ഇന്ത്യയില്‍ ധാരാളമായി കൃഷി ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്. വനം വകുപ്പിന്റെ സോഷ്യല്‍ ഫോറസ്ട്രിയില്‍ കാര്യമായ ഇടം നേടിയ മരമാണ് യൂക്കാലി. ഊട്ടിയിലും കൊടൈക്കനാലിലും കേരളത്തിലെ മിക്ക വനാതിര്‍ത്തികളിലും ഇവ സമൃദ്ധം. നല്ല അന്തരീക്ഷ ഈര്‍പ്പവും ധാരാളം മഴയും ഇതിന്റെ വളര്‍ച്ചയ്ക്ക് അനുകൂലഘടകങ്ങളാണ്. എല്ലാത്തരം മണ്ണിലും വളരും എന്നതും യൂക്കാലിയുടെ പ്രത്യേകതയാണ്.

നിലമൊരുക്കല്‍

നിലം ഒരുക്കി 45X45X45 സെ.മീ അളവില്‍ 2X2 മീറ്റര്‍ അകലത്തില്‍ കുഴികളെടുക്കണം. നടീലിന് ഒരു മാസം മുന്നെ കുഴികളെടുത്തശേഷം വെളളം കെട്ടി നില്‍ക്കാതെ മൂടി ഇടുന്നതാണ് നല്ലത്.

നടീല്‍

കാലവര്‍ഷാരംഭത്തോടെ നഴ്‌സറിയില്‍ നിന്നും 4-5 മാസം പ്രായമായ തൈകള്‍ പറിച്ചു നടാം. തൈ നട്ടതിനുശേഷം ചുവട്ടില്‍ മണ്ണുകൂട്ടി കൊടുക്കുന്നത് ഉചിതമാകും.ഇതുവഴി ജലം കെട്ടിനിന്ന് അഴുകുന്നത് ഒഴിവാക്കാം.

വളപ്രയോഗം

വളപ്രയോഗം പൊതുവെ ആവശ്യമില്ലെങ്കിലും ചെടിയൊന്നിന് 400 ഗ്രാം അമോണിയം സള്‍ഫേറ്റും 60 ഗ്രാം സൂപ്പര്‍ ഫോസ്‌ഫേറ്റും 25 ഗ്രാം മ്യൂറിയേറ്റ് ഓഫ് പൊട്ടാഷും മൂന്നാം വര്‍ഷം മുതല്‍ ആഗസ്റ്റ് മാസത്തില്‍ ഇട്ടുകൊടുത്താല്‍ വിളവ് വര്‍ദ്ധിക്കും

കൃഷിപ്പണികള്‍

ചെറുതൈകളുടെ ചുറ്റിലുമുള്ള കളകള്‍ കൈകൊണ്ട് നീക്കം ചെയ്യാം.ആദ്യവര്‍ഷം കളനീക്കാന്‍ ഇടയിളക്കുന്നത് നല്ലതാണ്. തോട്ടത്തിലേക്ക് തീ പടരാതിരിക്കാന്‍ നല്ല ശ്രദ്ധ വേണം.

ഇടവിളകൃഷി

കാപ്പി,ഇഞ്ചിപ്പുല്ല്,പമറോസ എന്നിവ ഇടവിളയായി കൃഷി ചെയ്യാം. ആദ്യത്തെ നാല് വര്‍ഷം പൈനാപ്പിള്‍, ചേന,പച്ചക്കറികള്‍ എന്നിവയും ഇടവിളയായി കൃഷി ചെയ്യാം.

വിളവെടുപ്പും സംസ്‌ക്കരണവും

പാര്‍ശ്വശിഖരങ്ങള്‍ കോതുന്നത് രണ്ടാം വര്‍ഷം മുതല്‍ ആരംഭിക്കാം. മൂന്നാമത്തെയോ നാലാമത്തെയോ വര്‍ഷം മുതല്‍ രണ്ട് മീറ്റര്‍ ഉയരത്തിന് മുകളിലുളള ചില്ലകള്‍ ഇറക്കിത്തുടങ്ങണം. അതിനുശേഷം വര്‍ഷത്തില്‍ രണ്ടുതവണ വശങ്ങളിലേക്ക് വളരുന്ന ശാഖകള്‍ മുറിച്ചുമാറ്റി ഒരു ശാഖമാത്രം നിലനിര്‍ത്തണം. ആവിയില്‍ വാറ്റിയാണ് എണ്ണ എടുക്കുന്നത്. വാറ്റാന്‍ രണ്ട് മണിക്കൂര്‍ വേണം. മൊത്തം ഇലയുടെ ഭാരത്തിന്റെ 1.5 മുതല്‍ 1.8 ശതമാനം എണ്ണ ലഭിക്കും. മുറിച്ചെടുത്ത ഇല 24 മണിക്കൂര്‍ തണലില്‍ വാട്ടുന്നത് കൂടുതല്‍ എണ്ണ കിട്ടാന്‍ സഹായിക്കും.1,8 സിനിയോള്‍(1,8 -cineole) എന്നും യൂക്കാലിപ്‌ടോള്‍ എന്നും എണ്ണ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു

ഔഷധ ഗുണം

ചുമ,ജലദോഷം,ശ്വാസതടസ്സം എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് തയ്യാറാക്കുന്ന മരുന്നുകളില്‍ യൂക്കാലി ഓയില്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുണ്ട്. പേശികളുടെയും സന്ധികളുടെയും വേദനസംഹാരികളിലും ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു. ആന്റിസെപ്റ്റിക്കും പെര്‍ഫ്യൂമും സൗന്ദ്രര്യസംവര്‍ദ്ധകവും ടൂത്ത്‌പേസ്റ്റുകളിലെ ഫ്‌ളേവറുമൊക്കെയായി യൂക്കാലി അവതരിക്കുന്നു. ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് വര്‍ഷങ്ങളായി ചൈനയിലും ഇന്ത്യന്‍ ആയുര്‍വ്വേദത്തിലും ഗ്രീക്ക് വൈദ്യത്തിലും യൂറോപ്യന്‍ ചികിത്സാരീതിയിലും യൂക്കാലിക്ക് ഇടമുണ്ട്. യൂക്കാലിപ്റ്റസ് ഗ്ലോബുലസ്(Eucalyptus globulus) ആണ് പ്രധാനമായും കൃഷി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ആന്റിഓക്‌സിഡന്റായ ഫ്‌ളേവനോയ്ഡും ആന്റിഇന്‍ഫ്‌ളമേറ്ററിയായ ടാനിനും എണ്ണയില്‍ അടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇത് ആന്റിമൈക്രോബയലുമാണ്. മൗത്ത്‌വാഷിലും ദന്തമരുന്നുകളിലും ഇത് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു. ഇതൊരു ഇന്‍സെക്ട് റപ്പല്ലന്റുമാണ്. കൊതുകിനെയും ഈച്ചയെയും ചെള്ള്,പേന്‍ എന്നിവയെയും ഇത് ഉപയോഗിച്ച് അകറ്റി നിര്‍ത്താം. വാതത്തിനും ജലദോഷം മൂലം അടഞ്ഞ മൂക്ക് തുറക്കുന്നതിനും മുറിവിനും പൊളളലിനും അള്‍സറിനും തണുപ്പുകുരുവിനും ബ്ലാഡര്‍ രോഗങ്ങള്‍ക്കും പ്രമേഹത്തിനും പനിക്കും ഫ്‌ളൂവിനും ഔഷധമാണ് യൂക്കാലിപ്റ്റസ്.

വീട്ടുചികിത്സ

യൂക്കാലിയുടെ കിളുന്തില ഇളം ചൂടുവെളളത്തിലിട്ടശേഷം ഗാര്‍ഗിള്‍ ചെയ്യുന്നത് തൊണ്ട ചൊറിച്ചിലും സൈനസും മാറാന്‍ സഹായിക്കും. ഇലയിട്ട് അവി പിടിക്കുന്നത് ജലദോഷം ശമിപ്പിക്കും. ശ്വാസതടസമുള്ളവരില്‍ കഫം അലിയിക്കാനും ഇത് സഹായിക്കും. പുഴുപ്പല്ല് വരാതിരിക്കാനും ഇലയിട്ട് തിളപ്പിച്ച ജലം വായില്‍ കൊള്ളുന്നത് നല്ലതാണ്.

Eucalyptus - Excellent medicinal tree

Eucalyptus is a medicinal plant that grows in the tropics and subtropics. Eucalyptus, a native of Australia, has been widely cultivated in India since British times. Eucalyptus is a tree that has gained a significant place in the social forestry of the forest department. They are abundant in Ooty, Kodaikanal and most of the forests in Kerala. Good atmospheric humidity and abundant rainfall are favorable factors for its growth. Eucalyptus also grows in all types of soils.

Land preparation

The ground should be prepared and the pits should be made as 45X45X45 cm by 2X2 m apart. It is better to dig the pits one month before planting and cover it to avoid water logging.

Planting

With the onset of monsoon, 4-5 month old seedlings can be transplanted from the nursery. After planting the seedlings, it is advisable to cover with soil to avoid water logging

Fertilizer application

Fertilizer application is not generally required but yields can be increased by applying 400 g of ammonium sulphate, 60 g of super phosphate and 25 g of muriate of potash per plant from the third year on every August.

Plant care

Weeds around the seedlings can be removed by hand. Care should be taken not to spread the fire to the garden.

Inter cropping

Coffee, lemongrass and palmarosa can be grown as inter crops. For the first four years, pineapple, elephant foot yam and vegetables can also be grown as inter crops.

Harvesting and processing

Lateral pruning can start from the second year. From the third or fourth year on wards, twigs above 2 m in height should be cut. After that, twice a year the lateral branches should be pruned and only one branch should be maintained. The oil is extracted by steam. It takes two hours to bake. Oil yields 1.5 to 1.8 percent of the total leaf weight. The cut leaves can be dried in the shade for 24 hours to get more oil. The oil is also known as 1,8-cineole or eucalyptol.

Medicinal value

Eucalyptus oil is used in medicine for cough, cold and shortness of breath. Used as pain killer in muscle and joint pain. Eucalyptus is an antiseptic, perfume, cosmetic and flavor enhancer for toothpastes. Eucalyptus has been used in China, Indian Ayurveda, Greek medicine, and European medicine for thousands of years. Eucalyptus globulus is the main cultivar. The oil contains flavonoids, an antioxidant, and tannin, an anti-inflammatory. It is also antimicrobial. It is used in mouthwash and toothpaste. This is an insect repellent. It can be used to repel mosquitoes, flies, fleas and lice. Eucalyptus is a remedy for rheumatism, cold sore, wound, burn, ulcer, cold, bladder diseases, diabetes, fever and flu.

Home Remedies

Gargling after soaking tender leaves in lukewarm water can help relieve sore throat and sinuses. Steaming with leaves can cure colds. It also helps to dissolve mucus in nose & shortness of breath. It is better to take boiled water with the leaves in the mouth to prevent tooth decay.
