Tiger's Nest-one of the wonders of the world

We were  ready at six in the morning , as Jigme had said that  climbing up the hill should begin in the morning and the temple would be closed at 12 noon. The morning rays come from clear air, the air of the snow-clad mountains. Paro Tatsang, also known as Tiger's Nest, is located at an altitude of 10,240 feet above the sea level, 10 km from Paro. By seven o'clock there were more than 100 people present. We met a few Malayalees who were in a group from Delhi. It was a tour of an IT company. The journey to the temple cost Rs.500/- Jigme said it takes at least three hours to climb the mountain. Even though we started together, Rajeev and Radhakrishnan sometimes be behind. At that time, Jigme and I would discuss many things on Bhutan. The journey was on a path formed of regular pilgrim movement. A girl who was going in front of us skid and luckily caught hold on  a shrub. Those who were with her supported her to come up. When we saw the depth of the downhill, we sweat on such a cold day. Fortunately, there was no death.

The journey continued through the main road to reach the temple. Some monks use the south and northwest canyons. The journey was through pine forests. Mosses and ferns can also be seen. Initially, we saw a Prayer wheel running on the power of the water flowing from the mountain. On the half way, there was a village level monastery (Lakhang), from there we can see the copper-colored mountain paradise of Padmasambhav. There is  a cafeteria here. We hadn't taken any refreshment as we didn't want to miss the time of entry to the temple. You can hear the sound of people, the music of birds and the rhythm of a waterfall  somewhere near. The wind swirled around . Jigme said that walking becomes tiring when it is steep. He advised to take zigzag .It was a great relief.  Oak trees were occasionally spotted. The size and age of some of the Brown oak (Quercus semecarpifolia) were shown  recorded. Many 100 year old oak trees were there. In Bhutan, there is a method of placing bones of the deceased in rock caves. When climbing the mountain, there were many such sights. On the way,we saw a wood house where Khenpo Geshey Guenden Rinchen was born in 1926 as  son of Kunzang Dorji and Chokey. Going forward again, there was a beautiful view point. From there you can see the temple and the valley. While there, you can hear the sound of the waterfall a little closer. The view of the waterfall is amazing. The water that flows during night changes to ice and partially melts during the day. In fact, the water flows through a blanket of snow.

The temple is truly one of the wonders of the world. The temple was built in 1692  around the cave where  Guru Padmasambhava meditated  for four months. It is considered as the thirteenth Thangsang, created by Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye. It is amazing to see such a temple being built on such a high edge of the mountain in a time when there were no technical facilities. It was a moment when we bowed to the might of human labor. There was a heavy security check before entering the temple. No mobile and bag can carry. Put everything in the locker except money and puja materials. There were many paintings on the wall. These are related to Lord Buddha and Padmasambhava. Four main temples and a dwelling place for the monks have been built using the rocks and caves. There are 8 caves inside. The temple looks like a lizard sticks to its wall. There are 12 Bodhisattva images. The most striking figure is the image of Avalokitheswara. Those who study Vajrayana Buddhism have been studying here for 3 years. At that time they would not even go to the nearest town,Paro. All rooms in the temple are interconnected with stairs. It is made of rock and wood. All rooms have balconies. The views of the Himalayas through it are beautiful. In 1998, a huge fire broke out in the temple. The temple was then renovated. 135 million was spent on Ngultrum. Ngultrum (Nu) is the currency of Nepal. Nultrum retains the equivalent of the Indian rupee.

On each turn,  everybody looks back once more, to see this great wonder. Generally, donkeys were used to carry materials for the temple. A group of donkeys coming back after supplying materials ,Radhakrishnan and I were on one side and Jigme and Rajeev were on the other. We waited on the side of the path to give space for donkeys to go.  Jigme shouted asking to look back. We saw three donkeys came up behind us with great speed. We ran away. Otherwise we would have been trampled on by their hoofs. It took us a long time to get over the fear.

We had hoped to see the flight landing and takeoff at the airport in the evening but could not see as  the  flight cancelled. The dinner was at another farmhouse. Not as professional as Amchoton. We took Takin, a red wine, rice, mix vegetable, ginger  potatoe, noodles, yamudachi (chili cheese), and meat from there. After enjoying the food, we returned to see the palace lighting and the beauty of the timber bridge. We went down to the handicrafts shops and spent some time buying a few pieces . Jigme said that if you get up early in the morning, you can see the take off of the plane. We agreed to it and went to bed .
